About us

Le Laboratoire Geo-Ocean – pôle UBS (anciennement LDO - GMGL - LGO) est une équipe de recherche en geosciences and eco-management of marine, coastal and littoral environments located at the University of Southern Brittany in Vannes, France. The LGO - UBS belongs to the Mixed Research Unit (UMR) 6538 CNRS and works in partnership with the LGO – IUEM UBO. Since its creation in 2000, the laboratory has become an expert in the study and management of marine, coastal and coastal environments, and their past, current and future evolution in France and internationally. Multidisciplinary research is carried out in geomorphology, geochemistry, paleontology, oceanography, numeric modelling, risk and vulnerability, ecology and spatial planning.

For 20 years, our researchers have forged numerous partnerships with various other laboratories, universities, private companies, collectivities and associations from Brittany to the international scale. We strengthen these collaborations everyday by getting involved and supporting multiple projects.

Our main activities

The laboratory has 3 main activities :

La RESEARCH

In order to better understand the environmental aspects of coastal and marine environments, our researchers, engineers and technicians carry out regular field campaigns to collect and analyze long-term data. The results then allow us to improve our current knowledge of these environments, ultimately to predict and help communities make appropriate land-use planning decisions.

 

 

La EDUCATION

L'équipe LGO intervient au sein de la Licence S.V.T du parcours Sciences de l'Environnement et pilote le Master Ingénierie Côtière. Ces deux formations pluridisciplinaires permettent d'acquérir des connaissances fondamentales et des compétences techniques. Elles conduisent à des métiers de techniciens et ingénieurs dans les domaines des sciences de la mer et du littoral.

 

L'OBSERVATION

As part of our research projects, we need to build a long-term observation data-base in order to understand how coastal and marine environments work and how we can anticipate risks and needs. Since 20 years we have been building a rich GIS data-base on water quality, hydrodynamics, sedimenary processes, coastline evolutions, climate change... In 2017 our team set up a citizen participatory sciences program named OCLM, in Morbihan.

Research fields and expertise services

The LGO UBS works in 6 different scientific fields :

LITTORAL AND MARINE DYNAMICS

Measurement and analysis of hydrodynamics, morphological and sedimentary characteristics of the different types of coast (beaches, cliffs, mudflats, ports, estuaries ...). in situ des différents types de côte (plages, falaises, vasières, ports, estuaires...).

COASTAL AND MARINE SEABED SEDIMENTOLOGY

Analysis of the nature and morphodynamics of the seabed (evolution of sand banks, sequential stratigraphy...).

REMOTE-SENSING AND PHOTOGRAMMETRYTRIE

Acquisition and processing of UAV images for topographic and photodynamic studies.
Satellite images processing for Suspended Matter studies, sediment flows and vegetation monitoring.

COASTAL AND MARINE SEDIMENTS GEOCHEMISTRY

Evaluation of heavy metals and Metal Trace Elements levels in sediments in ports and natural environments. Carrying out probing at the water-sediment interface.

QUALITY OF COASTAL ECOSYSTEMSÈMES CÔTIERS

Sampling in situ et analyses en laboratoire d'échantillons d'eau, de sédiments et de phytoplancton permettant d'évaluer la qualité d'un milieu (présence de métaux lourds, quantité de nutriments, taux d'O2...).

CLIMATE CHANGE

Reconstruction of paleoclimates, paleoshoreline and paleoecosystems using bioindicators (pollens, foraminifera ...). Analysis of the current climate and predictions of future climates and sea level rise.
