Projet TIGER

Projet TIGER

TIGER project (Tidal Stream Industry Energiser Project) - Interreg Manche

The development of tidal power in France and in the United Kingdom

The project will reinvigorate a crippled sector by creating cross-border partnerships to develop new technologies, test them and usethem in several areas of the Channel area, and use the learnings from this project to defend tidal turdbines as part of the UK-FR energy program.

Project leaders : European Regional Development Fund

FEDER contribution : 28.041.816,01 €

Total budget : 46.770.801,56 €

Length of the project : Juillet 2019 - Décembre 2023

Presentation

The TIGER project :

  • Will reactivate the undeveloped Ramsey Sound site (Pembroke, UK) and install new turbines with a capacity of up to 1 MW
  • Will create a new community and operational energy program in the Isle of Wight with new turbines of up to 1.2 MW capacity
  • Will convert the Paimpol-Bréhat site (Brittany, FR) into a test site where a 100 kW system will be installed
  • Will initiate the authorization procedures for 2 new sites at Raz Blanchard (Normandy, FR) and one site in Morbihan (Brittany, FR) with the installation of a 500 kW system and the possibility of installing an additional 6MW

Therefore, the project could involve a total additional energy capacity of 8.8 MW, leading to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 11,000 tons per year, an investment in coastal communities, an economic increase in Gross Added Value of €13 million per year and a reduction in tidal turbine costs of approximately €150/MWh.

Achievements

  • 15 new turbines installed
  • 13 technologies developed and tested, new processes for obtaining authorizations
  • 46 optimized or new product designs in the marine tidal turbine sector
  • 5 new low-carbon technology networks
